PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically stop the operation of a variable speed controller despite the occurrence of the cutting of wiring that is caused by the wrong wiring or a careless accident, etc., by stopping the operation of the controller when no coincidence is confirmed between the output of a contact input sequence setter and that of a contact input state detector. SOLUTION: A contact input state detector 93 inputs the output of an input contact unit 5 to change and select the driving speed of a motor 1 and detects the contact input state. A variable speed controller 2 selects a driving speed that is previously set in accordance with the inputted contact information and then drives the motor 1 by a new speed command. A comparator 92 compares the output of a multistage input contact input sequence setter 91 which previously sets the contact input sequence of a multistage input contact device 3 with the contact input information obtained by the detector 93. If no coincidence is confirmed between the said input and information, an error signal is outputted to the controller 2. Thus, the controller 2 stops the driving of the motor 1.
