The steering gear comprises a toothed rack(118) attached to a piston(160) housed in a hydraulic power cylinder(116) and extending outwards from the cylinder's open end(172). An annular hydraulic seal(164) is in dynamic sealing contact with the rack and defines a fixed end of a hydraulic fluid chamber(173) of variable volume extending from the piston to the seal. A housing section(114) is fitted to the power cylinder and supports the seal at a point opposite the open end of the cylinder, and defines one end section(191) of the fluid chamber.
