Elastomer springs held guidably on an assembly plate are deformed by pressure such that pressure is applied to the workpieces at right angles to the press movement. The press presses the spring downwards so the assembly plate is located in the press by the resulting friction and the springs thrust off the plate and workpiece from the sides to ensure the resultant press force acts at right angles to the press surface.
