PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To start the focusing of a focusing lens based on the result of the detection of a line of sight without a time lag when the instruction of a focusing start is issued. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a line-of-sight detecting means for detecting the gazing position of an observer within an observation plane, a focusing means for performing focusing by driving a focusing lens based on focus information obtained in a focusing area selected according to the gazing position out of plural focusing areas and a focusing start intruction means (A05) for starting the focusing action (A08) of the focusing means. The device is also provided with a control means (A04) actuating the line-of-sight detecting means before the focusing start instruction means instructs to start the focusing action.
