The invention relates to a device for fixing in place a handrail element 1, especially a stair banister element, to threaded rods 3 projecting from the side of the step 2 or ledge. The device has an upper stay 4 and a lower stay 5, which are connected to each other pivotably in relation to a common axis and are provided with a locking member 7, 8 for locking the upper stay 4 and the lower stay 5 one relative to the other. The free end of the lower stay 5 is provided with a hole or recess for fixing to the said threaded rod 3. The upper stay 4 has a gripping member 9, which at its free end is arranged to engage in the banister element 1 and is locked thereto once the locking member 7, 8 between the said upper stay 4 and lower stay 5 has been brought into the locking position. <IMAGE>
