A skier carries a radio transmitter (10) which is activated when an accelerometer detects that he/she has been caught by an avalanche and buried. The radio distress signal is received by one of a system of detecting stations (101) and relayed to a rescue center (102,103) which identifies the particular detecting station involved and sends a rescuer. The rescuer or rescuers use portable locating/directional signal strength equipment (30) to find the skier.
