The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for separating a target from clutter in an infrared image, which enables performance of separating a target from background clutter to be improved by using information regarding movement or stoppage of the target. According to an embodiment of the present invention, a method for separating a target from clutter in an infrared image may comprise the steps of: receiving an infrared image detected by using an infrared detector; determining whether a target moves in the received infrared image; defining a first feature value corresponding to a feature of the stopped target when the target stops, and defining a second feature value corresponding to a feature of the moving target when the target moves; and separating the target from background clutter in the infrared image based on the first and second feature values.
