A paper tail cutter for cutting a moving paper tail comprising first and second cutting surfaces positionable in a default open position on opposite sides of the paper tail substantially in a common plane that intersects the paper tail. An actuating member in the form of a quick acting pneumatic cylinder causes relative movement of the cutting surfaces in the common plane to a cutting position in which the surfaces engage with each other to exert a cutting action transverse to the movement of the paper tail. The paper tail cutter of the present invention is very compact and rugged for retro-fitting into an existing papermaking machine set up to provide reliable operation with minimal maintenance.
