PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure good dryability and silver tone even in rapid processing and to improve silver tone, pressure fog and residual color by disposing a hydrophilic colloidal layer containing specified flat platy silver halide grains and carrying out hardening with a vinylsulfone hardening agent. SOLUTION: The silver halide photographic sensitive material has one or more hydrophilic colloidal layers containing specified flat platy silver halide grains and is hardened with a vinylsulfone hardening agent. The flat platy silver halide grains have (1, 1, 1) faces as principal planes, 0.5-3.0μm equivalent circular diameter and 0.07-0.7μm thickness and contain epitaxially deposited silver halide protrusions forming epitaxial joined parts and having a face- centered cubic lattice structure. The silver halide protrusions are situated on the peripheral edge parts of the host flat platy grains. During the time from the beginning of growth to the end, the silver halide protrusions are formed under the condition that the average distance between grains represented by the equation (the average distance between grains)=[(the volume of a reactive solution)/(the number of growing grains in the reactive solution)]1/3 has the minimum value and at the time when it becomes near to te minimum.
