PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic recording medium having a low light transmittance and a low surface resistance as well as superior durability and good electromagnetic transducing characteristics. SOLUTION: A magnetic recording layer containing a resin binder, a magnetic particulate powder and a filler material is formed on a nonmagnetic substrate to obtain the objective magnetic recording medium. The filler material is a black composite hematite particulate powder having 0.08-1.0μm average particle diameter obtained by coating the particulate surface of hematite particulate powder with a fluorine-containing organosilane compound formed from a fluoroalkylsilane and sticking carbon black to at least part of the resulting coating. The coating weight of the carbon black is 1-30 pts.wt. based on 100 pts.wt. hematite particulate powder. The filler material is contained by 1-30 pts.wt. based on 100 pts.wt. magnetic particulate powder.
