PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for reading with which even first category information including numerals can be speedily and surely read. SOLUTION: This device has a first category information identification module 19 for recognizing the first category information except a numeral part in the first category information inside a character string and a second category information identification module 22 for recognizing the excluded numeral part and the numerals of second category information on the basis of the end of recognition of this first category information. Then, speedy reading is realized by utilizing a first category information data base skipping numerals and a second category information data base storing the skipped numerals.
