The differential system has a differential gear assembly in a case (16) rotatably mounted in an outer housing (14), and coupled between a vehicle drive shaft and a pair of drive axles. A limited slip assembly comprises a hydraulic actuator coupled between the case and one drive axle for selectively resisting relative rotation between drive axles. A variable pressure relief system selectively controls the limited slip assembly. An Independent claim is included for a method of controlling the limited slip differential.
