PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character checking device which applies the pattern matching to surely segment the characters and also to effectively check even the fine cracks and flaws. SOLUTION: This character checking device applies the pattern matching via a gray level dictionary to detect the character positions and binarizes the data on the detected character areas to detect the binary characters by means of a binary dictionary. When the pattern matching is performed via the gray level dictionary, an automatic character search area setting part 33 decides a character search area of a character following the detected character to improve the matching efficiency. In a multi-font matching mode, a font matching sequence table 35 is dynamically updated so that the fonts which succeeded in the matching are collared with each other earlier.
