PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably generate damping force in relation to sudden fluctuation of the flow rate of oil, in a damping force adjusted type hydraulic shock absorber. SOLUTION: A slider 39 is slidably fitted in a piston bolt 4, and pressure control valves 21, 32 on the extension side, and the contraction side for controlling pressure of oil between port 19, 20 and between ports 30, 31 are formed of valve members 42, 43 attached on both ends of the slider 39. Oil chambers 57, 58 on both ends of the valve members 42, 43 are shut off from the ports 20, 31 on the downstream side of the pressure control valves 21, 32 on the extension side and the contraction side by flange parts of the valve members 42, 43. Since suddenly changed pressure of the ports 20, 31 is not transmitted to the oil chamber 47, 58, when the flow rate of oil is suddenly changed, even when pressure of the ports 20, 31 is suddenly changed by the flow resistance of check valves 22, 33 on the downstream side of the ports 20, 31, the slider 39 will not moved by pressure fluctuations, and therefore, a stable damping force can be obtained..
