PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processor capable of satisfactory image processing without prescanning an original. SOLUTION: When a scanner 1 is to perform main scanning for original reading, parallel with image data processing by means of a data processing part 4, a histogram concerning the gradation of image data is prepared by a histogram preparing part 31. Based on the histogram, a gradation area in the base part of the original is calculated by a base data calculating part 33 and on the basis of this area, an edge extraction threshold is variably set by a threshold setting part 34. The edge extraction threshold is used as deciding conditions when extracting the edge part of a character image or the like in a character area deciding part 42. Based on the decided result of the character area deciding part 42, an image processing part 41 applies suitable processing to the image data.
