PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a diesel engine having a supercharger that can contribute to compacting of the engine and hardly give a bad effect to engine performance even when fuel having less ignitability than light oil at a normal compression ratio is used. SOLUTION: This diesel engine has a supercharger 1 for sucking outside air A1, pressurizing the air, and supercharging it into a cylinder, and a heat exchanger in a supercharging passage from the outlet of the supercharger to the inlet of the cylinder to cool the supercharged air from the outlet of the supercharger. This heat exchanger is a hybrid heat exchanger 2 comprising a first heat exchanger 2a for receiving a first heat exchange medium and exchanging heat between it and the supercharged air from the outlet of the supercharger and a second heat exchanger 2b for receiving a second heat exchange medium higher in temperature than the first heat exchange medium and exchanging heat between it and the supercharged air from the outlet of the first heat exchanger.
