PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus that can accurately detect the height of the surface of an object even when the object is placed with an offset from its proper mount position and even when an external noise possibly causing mis-detection of the height of the object such as a hand or a finger exists on a photographing base. SOLUTION: The reference emission position of a laser beam for height detection is revised to a position at which the object certainly exists and external noise such as a hand and a finger is absent on the basis of the detection result of the surface shape of the object (S7-S9), and the position of a laser light source is moved depending on the reference emission position (S10). Since the height is detected by using an area in which the object certainly exists and external noise such as a hand and a finger is absent, the height can accurately be detected.
