PURPOSE: A method of performing an adaptive polling of a router is provided to accumulate the number of packet signals received to each port for a regular time, and to perform a polling according to an order of having a bigger accumulated value, so as to improve a router capacity. CONSTITUTION: A router sets an initial polling time and the number of polling by port, and performs a polling according to each port, then processes packets(S1-S3). The router simply accumulates packet signals inputted to each port for the set time, and decides whether the initial set time elapses(S4-S5). If so, the router resets a polling time, and accumulates the packet signals inputted to each port for the set time. The router calculates accumulated values by considering importance of each port, weight by a maximum packet speed, and a default by a maximum permit delay(S6-S7). The router calculates the amount of traffic to decide how many times polling processes should be performed for a port(S8).
