PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ignition device for an internal combustion engine capable of preventing the mis-ignition of an air-fuel mixture caused by the generation of the spark discharging on an ignition plug in starting the current-carrying to a primary winding, and generating and detecting the ion current between electrodes of the ignition plug. SOLUTION: In this ignition device 1 for the internal combustion engine, the current flowing by the induced voltage generated in a secondary wiring L2 in starting the current-carrying to the primary winding L21 is blocked by a diode 31 for preventing the reverse-current, so that the spark discharging is not generated between the electrodes 13a and 13b of the ignition plug 13 in starting the current-carrying to the primary winding L1. The ion current is generated when the electrostatic capacitance C formed of a conductor 33 charged by the residual energy of the ignition coil 15 after the termination of the spark discharging is discharged and the voltage is applied between the electrodes 13a and 13b of the ignition plug 13.
