PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid misfire or knocking, to stabilize combustion during compression ignition, and to enlarge a compression ignition range. SOLUTION: It is determined that an operation range is within the compression ignition range and a compression ignition control is executed (S2). Then, it is determined whether or not the operation range has fluctuated on the basis of cylinder information acquired by a cylinder information detecting means until just before compression ignition (S4). When it is determined there is an operation range fluctuation, a combustion form is switched to stratified spark ignition combustion (S7). In a stratified spark ignition combustion control, spark ignition is carried out by an ignition plug and stratified spark combustion is provided by re-injecting fuel just before ignition. Since the fluctuation of the operation range is also determined until right before ignition in the compression ignition control, stable combustion can be provided by avoiding misfire and knocking in a boundary range between the compression ignition and the spark ignition, and the compression ignition range can be relatively enlarged.
