PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a supporting column having good fracture resistance for a protection fence. SOLUTION: A supporting column main body 15 holds an upper lateral beam 5 and a lower lateral beam 6, and in the base part of the supporting column main body 15, a recess part 22 is formed. In this structure, when a horizontal load is applied to the tip part of the supporting column main body 15 in the arrow A direction the tip part of the supporting column main body 15 is displaced horizontally with a low load by a set amount around the recess part 22. Therefore, no high load at a fracture level is applied to the base part of the supporting column body 15, and consequently, fracture in the base part is prevented and the fracture resistance is improved.
