PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a solid state imaging device in which resolution can be switched through a small scale element arrangement. SOLUTION: Every four continuous pairs of transfer electrodes 10 form a group wherein the first through fourth pairs of transfer electrodes 26, 28, 30 and 32 are connected, respectively, with first through fourth bus lines 18, 20, 22 and 24. A drive circuit 38 supplies first through fourth drive pulsesϕ1,ϕ2,ϕ3 andϕ4 to respective transfer electrodes through these bus lines. When a low resolution is set, signal charges of each photosensor 4 are read out below the first transfer electrodes 12 of the first and third pairs of transfer electrodes 26 and 30. Subsequently, the drive circuit 38 outputs only two-phase drive pulsesϕ2 andϕ3 at first, and then moves the charges beneath the third pair of transfer electrodes 30 below the first pair of transfer electrodes 26 and adds the signal charges of two adjacent photosensors 4.
