PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flexible belt-like material carrying device and a tension control method thereof capable of restricting the tension fluctuation of the flexible belt-like material in a processing unit for stable processing when processing a series of traveling flexible belt-like material. SOLUTION: This flexible belt-like material carrying device has a supplying unit 11 for supplying the continuous magnetic recording medium 100 at the predetermined reference speed, a cutting unit 31 for cutting the traveling magnetic recording medium 100 supplied from the supplying unit 11, a surface treatment unit 51 for performing the surface treatment to the cut magnetic recording medium 100a, tensile force giving mechanism 35 and 53 provided in the downstream of the cutting unit 31 and the surface treatment unit 31 to generate the tensile force in the magnetic recording medium 100 and 100a, and tensile force detecting units 91, 92 and 93 for detecting the tensile force generated in the upstream side and the downstream side of the tensile force giving mechanism 35 and 53. The tensile force giving mechanism 35 and 53 are controlled for drive to obtain the set tensile force on the basis of the tensile force detected in the upstream side and the downstream side.
