FIELD: catalyst preparation. SUBSTANCE: catalyst is prepared by oxidation of iron metal, melting of iron oxides with promoters, granulation of oxides with promoters, granulation of catalyst melt and cooling of granules from 1600 to 1000 C, transferring granules into heat- insulated reactor, performing first thermal firing within temperature range 1000-800 C and then within temperature range 800-450 C, and reduction by reducing gas followed by final cooling from 450 to 50 C in inert gas flow. According to invention, granulation of catalyst melt and cooling of granules are accomplished by pouring melt onto rotary cast-iron former provided with semispherical cells and having rotation speed 4-6 rpm. Resulting catalyst is obtained in narrow granulometric composition range necessary for radial packing pieces of ammonia-synthesis columns.
