PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for treating sludge, by which the service life of an ultrasonic transducer can be extended and the efficiency to irradiate the suspended organic matter in the sludge with an ultrasonic wave can improved by avoiding the contact of the ultrasonic transducer with the suspended inorganic matter in the sludge when the sludge is subjected to an ultrasonic treatment. SOLUTION: The contact of the suspended inorganic matter with the ultrasonic transducer 14 is avoided by arranging a spiral projecting piece 15 being a whirling current generating means in a ultrasonic treating cylindrical tank 11 having the ultrasonic transducer 14 in the central part, making the sludge flow as a whirling current and making the suspended inorganic matter in the sludge flow along the wall of the tank 11 by the centrifugal force generated by the whirling current.
