PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical shaft type pump which remarkably reduces the operation stop time for installation by eliminating the residual water draining work and engineering works and which slows both of a function for preventing the generation of air drawing whirl and a function for preventing the generation of whirl underwater. SOLUTION: A device 13 for preventing the generation of air drawing whirl to be positioned by floating for separation in an area wherein a air drawing whirl is to be generated in the periphery of a vertical shaft type pump by buoyancy when sinking a hollow column 13A underwater and to be positioned close to the vertical shaft type pump by lowering due to a dead weight thereof when the hollow column 13A is not sunk and a device 14 for preventing the generation of whirl underwater formed of a cross-shape baffle plate 14A having outside diameter set at the same value or a value a little larger with/than the outside diameter of an inlet of a suction bell mouse 4 are fitted to the vertical shaft type pump P so that the vertical shaft type pump P can be freely inserted and drawn into/from a pump insertion hole 3 provided in a pump installation floor 2 of a vertical shaft type pump installation tank 1.
