PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyvinyl alcohol-based film useful as a starting material for manufacturing a polarized film which is excellent in polarizing performances and durability performances, hardly undergoes changes in hue and is free from foreign matter of a size such that a trouble with display on a liquid crystal display arises. SOLUTION: The polyvinyl alcohol-based film is formed from a modified polyvinyl alcohol having a degree of polymerization of 1,500-5,000, an ethylene unit content of 1-4 mole % and a 1,2-glycol bond content of at most 1.4 mole % and has a YI value of at most 20.
