PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a camera having an AF function that makes accurate focusing possible without depending on the position of the principal object to be photographed in the screen. SOLUTION: The camera is mounted with an electronic imager and is equipped with a range finder that selects the principal object to measure the distance by means of optical signals obtained from the optical image of a plurality of ranging areas arranged in a photographic screen. When the position of the principal object can not be specified by this range finder, the camera is equipped with a focusing means that, by dividing the photographic screen into a plurality of areas, specifies the area where the principal object exists on the basis of luminance distribution obtained from areas excluding those overlapping the ranging areas, and that brings the position of the highest contrast signal into focus while the photographic lens position is scanned.
