Process for the preparation 3-aryl-2-hydroxypropionic acid derivative

A process for the preparation of a compound of formula (I) is disclosed. The process comprises reacting a compound of formula (II) with a compound of formula (III). Reaction conditions are described to involve the presence of a base, either solid or aqueous form, and a phase transfer catalyst at a temperature in the range 50oC to 150oC. R represents H or an acid protecting group, and X is a suitable leaving group.
