PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a selection assist device for an automatic transmission, in which the degree of freedom of layout can be enlarged due to compactness of a selection lever, and in which required selection lever operation force characteristics can be provided, while enabling range changing operation at the time of failure by mechanical connection of the selection lever to a range position changing device. SOLUTION: An assist control device for a control unit 22 is composed of a target position deviation setting part 33 to set a target position deviation between an operation position and a range position based on a detected operation position, a real position deviation computing part 34 to compute real position deviation, and a motor torque command value computing part 35 to compute a control command value for an assist actuator in such a way that the real position deviation follows the set target position deviation.
