By oscillating the conveyer with an amplitude 42 about an axis 5 excavated material 9 is directed through apertures 24 in the trough of the conveyer by the elements 25. The material is then conveyed by scrapers 20 on an endless chain 19 for transfer to a further conveyer 16 via a gap 14 and a hopper 15. A sprocket shaft 36 of the conveyer 4 is driven by two motors through speed reduction gear units 37 and the head 12 is adjustably secured by hydraulic units 13 which maintain tension of the chain 19. Wear plates 31, 32 are of manganese steel and the foot of the conveyer includes a cover 17. If material is to be removed from a tunnel having a flat floor, the feed end of the conveyer 4 is made to oscillate in a horizontal plane. |
