1311172 Production of alcohols UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO 24 Aug 1970 [27 Aug 1969] 40621/70 Heading C2C Alcohols are produced by reacting an olefinic hydrocarbon with water in the presence of an acidic catalyst and a polyether at an elevated temperature and recovering the resultant alcohol. Starting from propene, isobutylene, cyclohexene, cyclopentene, and 1-octene, there are obtained in Examples 1, and 3-7, isopropyl alcohol, t-butyl alcohol, cyclohexyl alcohol, cyclopentyl alcohol and sec.-octyl alcohol, respectively, using 1,7-dioxane, diethyl- and dimethyl-ethers of diethylene glycol and dimethyl ether of triethylene glycol as the polyethers. The reaction is preferably carried out at a temperature ranging from 75‹ to 250‹ C.
