摘要 1312330 Coating glass fibres OWENSCORNING FIBERGLAS CORP 2 Nov 1970 [20 Nov 1969 21 Nov 1969] 52021/70 Heading DIP A process for coating glass fibres with a material comprising an organic polymeric polysulphide and/or a resin formed by the condensation reaction of an aldehyde with a phenol having a substituent containing a sulphur atom. Examples of the phenol are mercapto phenol, 4-(methylthio) metacresol and 4 (methylthio) phenol. The coating material is present in an amount corresponding to 5 to 25% by weight of the glass fibres. The coating material also includes a compatible elastomeric material, e.g. vinyl pyridine-butadiene-styrene terpolymer, a resorcinol aldehyde latex and a natural rubber latex. More complete protection of the individual glass fibres and a fuller coordination with the elastomeric material in the continuous phase is achieved by including in the size composition an anchoring agent, e.g. gamma-aminopropyltriethoxy silane or other silanes or Werner complexes in which the carboxylate group coordinated with the trivalent nuclear chromium atom contains an amino or epoxy group. The anchoring agent constitutes 0.1 to 3.0% by weight and preferably 0.1 to 1% of the size composition. The glass fibres may be in the form of a bundle and contain a thin size coating on the surface. Water is incorporated in the impregnating composition which has a solids content of 10 to 50% by weight. The final product may constitute an elastomer as the continous phase and treated glass fibres distributed within the elastomer. In performing the process the glass fibres may be sized by passing a wiping pad that is constantly wet with the form size composition and then they are gathered into strands which are either air dried or at a temperature of 150 to 250‹F. The sized strands may be treated with the polysulphide composition by impregnation in a bath, removing excess composition by passing through a roller or die and drying in an air oven at ambient temperature, but preferably 150 to 350‹F for 1 to 30 minutes.
