1341966 Applying closure members to containers STANELCO Ltd 19 April 1971 [6 April 1970] 16186/70 Heading B8C A closure membrane 4 including a tear tab 4a and formed from a foil coated with a thermoplastic sealing material, is sealed to an end of a tubular member 5 by supporting the membrane so that a region of the membrane contacts the tubular member and the tear tab is located over at least a part of its area on a supporting surface to which the sealing material will not adhere and subjecting the membrane to an induction field so as to heat the sealing material above its fusion point at least in the aforementioned region while pressing the region against the tubular member and the tag against the supporting surface. As shown, the member 5 is supported in a sleeve 7 of P.T.F.E. having a groove 9 spaced from a flange 6 of the member 5, the tab 4a resting on the upper surface of the sleeve. An induction heating coil 1 is encapsulated in a block 2 of epoxy resin, to which is attached a pad 3 of resilient material, the coil 1 at the tab side being closer to the membrane 4 than at the other side and being attached to a block 11 of highly permeable material, whereby to intensify the heating effect in the vicinity of the tear tab. In a modification, the container 5 may be supported between moving belts, the pad 3 also being replaced by an endless resilient belt where member 5 may be conveyed continuously past a working coil 1 with sealing pressure being applied as the containers press below the coil. |
