1392590 Metal-plastics laminates CANADIAN INDUSTRIES Ltd 1 Aug 1973 [9 Aug 1972] 36522/73 Heading B5N Laminates of metal and certain polymers of 1-olefins are made by heating the metal surface to between the polymer crystalline melting point (C) and 350‹ C., pressing the polymer against the metal and immediately quenching the laminate so that the polymer cools at at least 20,000‹ C./minute until below C. The polymer is C 2 -C 4 1-olefin homopolymer or copolymer of density 0À91-0À98 g./cm.<SP>3</SP> or a blend of such polymers; polyethylene and ethylene-1-butene copolymers are preferred. The metal may be aluminium or chromatetreated or untreated steel and may be degreased before heating. The preferred temperature range for heating is 200-300‹ C. An initial cooling rate of 30,000‹ C./minute is obtained at 250‹ C. with an ice-bath. |
