Gelatine layer of a photographic element is hardened using a cpd. of formula (XCH2CH2SO2)2 (where X is Cl or Br and R is -CH2-, -CH(CH3)- or -CH2OCH2-) Cpds. (where X is Cl and B -CH2- and - CH2OCH2-) are partic. useful for Ag halide emulsion layers). Novel sulphones (where X is Cl or Br and R is - ch2- or -chch3) are also claimed. The hardeners do not affect the photosensitive characterises of the photographic element.
