<p>Prodn. of pure chlorides and/or oxides of Fe, Co, Ni, Cr, Mo, V, W, Cu, Zn, Pb and Sn (I), by treating (a) an oxidised Fe Oxide base mineral and >=1 other oxide from (I) or (b) a mixt. of impure oxides comprising FeO and >=1 other oxide of a metal of (I), by selective preliminary redn. (a) when the Fe oxide in the primary material is >10% of total, until Fe met / FeO is approx 0.05 with >=1/2 total Fe present as FeO, or (b) when the Fe oxide is the primary material 10% of total (the sum of the other metallic oxides from (I) must be >=10% of the material) and Me is the most difficult to reduce of the metals to be sepd., until Me / MeO = 0.15-0.60, and when the metal forms carbides, MeC / MeO must be brought to 0.20-0.7 The treated materials are then treated in a closed cycle of operations comprising successive chloridation of the metal(s) (II); condensn. of the volatile chlorides; opt. sepn. of the chlorides when there are >1; and oxidn. of the chlorides formed (III). The degree of conversion of chloride(s) into oxide(s) in (III) is chosen so that the gaseous phase chloridant used during (II) satisfies: 0.05 PCl 7 (PCl = partial elementary Cl press.) 0.10 PO 2.35 (PO = partial elementary O2 press.) with 2PCl (partial elementary press.) / PO2 (partial press.) 3+ equiv.-g reduced metal / equiv.-g total metal (the untransformed chloride(s), the oxide(s) not withdrawn from the circuit, and the liberated Cl being recycled to the (II) enclosure).</p> |
