The pressurised chamber, in a bowl comprising a stationary core around which a hollow cylinder forming the working surface of the bowl rotates, and acting in conjunction with a second bowl, to apply a low pressure uniformity and continuously to a web of matl. moving at very high speed through the nip between the two bowls, is formed by sealing strips extending in grooves along the length of the core, and occupies only a small segment of the circumference of the bowl, such as subtends an angle at the centre of less than 35 degrees. Any fluid escaping from the pressure chamber into the cavity of the hollow cylinder, is sucked away through an exhaust bore in the core. Though working at very high speeds the low operating pressure and the lesser friction of a pressure chamber with a smaller arc, require a much smaller energy input. |
