1451731 Rack and pinion gearing T R W INC 18 Feb 1974 [1 March 1973] 7292/74 Heading F2Q In a rack and pinion steering gear, the teeth 24 of a rack 15 are held in meshed engagement with a pinion 13 by a bearing 30 having an eccentric bore 34 which receives the rack 15. The bearing 30 is located in stepped bores 27, 28 formed in one end of a pinion housing 14. After the bearing 30 has been rotated to adjust the mesh, it is stacked by a deformation 37 of the housing wall. Another bearing 30a may be provided at the opposite end of the housing 14. Alternatively, the bore 30 may be concentric with the rack bar, and the bore 27 of the housing could be eccentric to the axis of the rack bar. In a modification, instead of staking the bearing 30 in the pinion housing, it is urged continuously circumferentially by a spring 41 in order to take up wear. In a further modification, the bearing is in the form of a wedge segment 51, and this may be urged circumferentially by a spring to take up wear. |
