The pen with interchangeable nib has a free ink reservoir, connected to a closed reservoir underneath it with nib by a passage through which ink is periodically injected from it into the closed reservoir. A fibre-stem assembly has a capillary connection at the top to the closed reservoir, and passes at the bottom through a passage in the nib. The pen is so constructed that the fibre stem can be adjusted by hand in the lengthwise direction in relation to the nib, thus varying the amount for which it protrudes.
