Method of cooling steel prods. at the exit of the rolling mill to produce a martensitic and/or bainitic surface layer in all or part of the rolled product while the unquenched part remains at a temp. sufficient to permit a tempering of the surface layer after completion of the cooling, comprises at least two (pref. several) short intense cooling steps separated by period(s) of homogenisation for at least the skin of the product, the final cooling step producing the hard phases. Used for cooling rod, coin, circular suction bar, flat sheet, welded plate etc. The skin of the product is maintained at a temp. at which the calorific exchange conditions are the optimum, and the water consumption is reduced to a minimum with the shortest possible cooling plant.
|
