1500355 Metal vapour lamps PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 24 Sept 1976 [29 Sept 1975] 39787/76 Heading H1D In a discharge lamp, e.g. a high pressure Na lamp, with ceramic envelope 10, e.g. of polycrystalline or single crystal alumina, spinel (MgAl 2 O 4 ) or Yttria, those parts of cylindrical Nb or Ta lead-through conductors 13, 14 from the electrodes, projecting from the envelope and reaching a temperature above 500‹ C. or preferably 350‹ C., are protected particularly from O 2 or N 2 , or air, in the absence of an outer jacket, by ceramic sleeves 15, 16 sealed gastightly to the conductors. If the conductors are tubular and open, the interior may be similarly protected by a ceramic plug 26 (Fig. 3). The sealing medium may be a glass comprising Al 2 O 3 , CaO, BaO, MgO, B 2 O 3 , SiO 2 . The alumina envelope 20 (Fig. 3), shrinkage sintered to alumina disc 21 and protected by glass-sealed alumina disc 24, carries Nb conductor sleeve 22 bearing moulded alumina sleeve 25 sealed to the conductor and to disc 24. The sleeve 25 may be combined with disc 24 as in Fig. 4, and also with disc 21 (Fig. 5, not shown). A starting electrode, possibly fed via a resistor from the neighbouring electrode (Fig. 1, not shown) may be sealed into the end disc (Fig. 5, not shown). |
