Method incorporates connecting the furnace chambers by rising pipes, capable of being closed, to two gas condenser-receivers which are placed along the battery and provided with sprinklers. The furnace chambers are connected to only one of these receivers during filling while during the rest of the time they are connected to the other receiver. Gas is transferred constantly from the second receiver to the first receiver. Wash liquor is extracted from the second receiver while gas and wash liquor are extracted from the first receiver. The tar is sepd. from the wash liquor extracted from the second receiver and the wash liquor is recycled. The gas extracted from the first receiver and the wash liquor are extracted and treated separately. The gas can be taken to an installation for recovery of materials of value or used in any other way. The tar and solid particles are sepd. from the wash liquor from the first receiver and the wash liquor is recycled. The tar is of little value because it contains a high proportion of dusts. The amt. is small, the main quality of tar in the gas coming from the wash liquor from the second receiver.
