The mechanism is used for piece of furniture, partic. a table or a bed, having its horizontal surface (1) supported by a single column (4). A guide mechanism arranged between the column and the surface permits limited horizontal movement of the surface relative to the column in two directions at right angles to one another. The mechanism may comprise an intermediate frame (7) which has two parallel guide rails (13) engaged by rollers (14) on the column and itself carries rollers (11) at its other two parallel sides which run in parallel rails (12) arranged on the surface (1) at right angles to the rails (13).
