The device is intended for physical training apparatuses with a pedal mechanism comprising a drum (9) driven by a pedal mechanism, a brake shoe (5), a mechanism for varying, at will, the force of application of the shoe (5) onto the drum (9) via a cable (4) and a force indicator. This mechanism is arranged using a screw (1) for adjusting the tension in the cable (4), and a nut (2) actuated by the said adjustment screw (1), the nut (2) actuating a frame (3) via a spring (14), and driving the cable (4). The force is indicated by means of an index (7) sliding inside a groove (8) arranged in a part (6) carrying a graduation, which is itself integral with the frame (3), so that when the nut is actuated by the adjustment screw, the frame (3) and the part (6) carrying the graduation move synchronously with the nut (2) and its index (7) until the cable (4) is again tensioned. <IMAGE>
