Title compds. (I and II, the position of hydrogens bonded 4a- and 9b-C is trans; X,Y = H, F; n = 3, 4; M = -CH(OH)-; Z = H, F, CH3O; m = 2, 3) were prepd. for use as tranquilizers. Thus, 8-fluoro-5-(p-fluorophenyl)-2-[4-hydroxy- 4 -(p-fluoro phenyl)-butyl -2,3,4,5-tetrahydropyrido 4,3-b indole was refluxed with tetraphydrofuran to give dl-trans-8-fluoro-5-(p-fluorophenyl) -2 -[4-hydroxy-4 -(p-fluorophenyl)butyl -2,3,4,4a,5,9b-hexahydro-1H-pyrido [4,3-b indole hydrochloride and dltrans-8-fluoro-5 -(p-fluorophenyl)-2 -[4-(p-fluorophenyl)-3-butenyl -2,3,4,4a,5,9b-hexahydro-1H-pyrido [4,3-b indole HCl.
