In designs for foundation supports to protect buildings from vertical as well as horizontal vibrations from earthquake tremors etc., the building stands on platforms connected by resilient supports to lower platforms fixed to the ground by a combination of elastic supports and dashpots. The elastic supports include pillars of 'neoprene' (polychloroprene) rubber. PTFE is used for low friction pads to allow horizontal shifts between metal caps on rubber pillars and steel plates under the platforms which may be supported by the pillars. PTFE coatings are used to line openings in metal plates through which some of the rubber pillars pass. PTFE hoops are also used to reduce friction between concentric caps on rubber pillars used to damp torsional movements. Designed to cope with vertical accelerations greater than 1g. No specific dimensions or rubber characteristics quoted.
|
