<p>PURPOSE:To pick up strokes of a character pattern without dividing into fine lines, by giving a direction code to each black picture element in response to the direction of connections through the scanning of a pattern area, and checking the connection through separate scanning at each direction code. CONSTITUTION:A character pattern is read in picture element unit with a CCD image sensor or the like, and binarized to set black picture elements to 1 and white picture elements to 0. As the pre-processing, the binarized pattern area is cut-out, and a direction code corresponding to the direction of connection is given to the black picture elements in the character area. Next, the pattern area is scanned to different direction at each direction code and the direction coding for undefined black picture elements can be made. The connection is judged by scanning the character area directed depending on the direction code and the picture element group of the connected same codes is picked up as a stroke. In this case, the number of picture elements of the strokes and the coordinates of each picture elements are summed. The center of gravity of each stroke is obtained from the sum and the thickness of lines is obtained without dividing into fine lines and the characteristic amount of the stroke reflected with the thickness of line can be obtained without dividing into fine lines.</p> |
