An internal combustion engine comprises a body (6) defining a cylinder (8), within which a piston (10) is mounted, and a cylinder head (12) secured to the body (6) over the cylinder (8), a chamber (16) being provided between the body and cylinder head within which a rotary valve member or rotor (18) is mounted for rotation in bearings (19). The rotor provides inlet ports (20) and exhaust ports (22) which are sequentially brought into communication with the cylinder to deliver a combustible fluid to the cylinder wherein the combustible fluid is ignited, and to exhaust gases from the cylinder. The rotor (18) is provided with a supplementary chamber (70) which is periodically brought into communication with the engine cylinder, and ignition means (72,74,75) which is operative to ignite combustible fluid in the supplementary chamber (70). Conveniently combustible fluid is delivered to the supplementary chamber (70) from the engine cylinder (8) prior to operation of the ignition means, but may be supplied to the supplementary chamber (70) by separate injection means (78). The rotor (18) comprises cooling means (33,35,36) through which cooling fluid is caused to flow during rotation of the rotor, to reduce the temperature of the rotor in operation. Sealing means (46 or 142 or 154) is provided which is operative between the opening into the engine cylinder and the circumferential surface (26) of the rotor to reduce the escape of gases from the cylinder. |
