PURPOSE:To prevent a rocker arm from becoming oversized by a method wherein the constitutional elements of the lash adjusting device such as a reservoir chamber, a check valve and the like are provided in a hollow section of a rocker shaft. CONSTITUTION:A first oil chamber 17 is formed by fixing a plunger 16 and a return spring 18 of the lash adjusting device to the rocker arm 14, the reservoir chamber 19, a second oil chamber 20 and a check valve 22 for allowing an oil to flow from the reservoir chamber 19 into the second oil chamber 20 are provided within the hollow section of the rocker shaft 11 and the first oil chamber 17 and the second oil chamber 20 are made to communicate with each other through an oil passage 24. As a result, the rocker arm 14 can be made small-sized and light in weight and the moment of inertia of the rocker arm becomes small so that a stabilized lash adjusting function is obtained even when the engine is operated at a high velocity. |
